SMASH KIDS MEDAL IN LOCAL AND INTERNATIONAL JUDO TOURNAMENTS

Last weekend Smash Kids Martial Arts student, Louie Noble Jr., competed in the Santa Clara PAL Judo Invitational.  Louie faced some really big and tough opponents in this local event and fought very well.  Louie placed 2nd and look home the silver medal!

Then on May 24, Aaron Jen competed in the 2013 Ganesa Cup Judo Open Championships in Jakarta, Indonesia. This international competition hosted competitors from Indonesia, Australia, France, Malaysia, Singapore, and Russia.  Aaron represented the USA. The skill level of all the kids the teens was extremely impressive.  It was very interesting to see the various styles of judo and how they differed from what Aaron had experienced competing in the USA.  The kids in this single elimination competition were grouped only by weight (no age or belt color separation). Aaron came out strong and won all his matches, placing 1st in his division.

Great performances at the San Mateo Boys & Girls Club Judo Development Tournament

Louie Noble Jr., Derek Jen, and Aaron Jen competed in the May 2013 San Mateo Boys and Girls Club Judo Developmental Tournament.  This is a small informal tournament put on 4 times a year for kids to give beginners competition experience.

Aaron was in a division in which he rolled though all 4 of his matches with ease and used the opportunity to try techniques he had not pulled off in competition before.  Derek was in a really tough division.  Not only was his division filled with kids his belt level and higher, but many of the kids were also significantly  heavier.  Derek ended up winning 4 out of his 6 matches.  Louie Noble Jr. dominated and won all 6 of his matches by either pinning or throwing his opponents for ippon.

In the end, Louie and Aaron placed 1st and Derek placed 3rd in their respective divisions.

Beginner Self-Defense & Combatives at Smash!

Our new Smashfit-Beginner Self-Defense & Combatives Class was a hit!

This class is designed for people with absolutely no martial arts experience and those interested in learning how to use Jiu-Jitsu technique for self-defense rather than sport. This is a no gi class. Jiu-Jitsu Combatives is the base for the US ARMY Combatives.

The techniques taught in this class have been tested over and over again in real life encoutners. The reason why the US Army adopted this curriculum as their base is because you are able to safely test them at full force to show the effectiveness. Our instructors have a deep technical knowledge of body mechanics and leverage so these techniques can work on anyone regardless of size or strength difference. Jiu-Jitsu combatives were designed for smaller and weaker people to safely control bigger and stronger people. The US Army and various Law Enforcement Agencies have recognized this and now seek our Jiu-Jitsu instruction for unarmed combat.

In this beginner friendly class, there is NO live sparring in which people will be really trying to punch or submit beginners. Students will be able to learn jiu-jitsu combatives and self-defense techniques in a non-competitive introductory class that has been designed for all fitness and skill levels.  All technique taught can be applied easily regardless of body type or athleticism.

While knowledge of Brazilian Jiu-jitsu can be invaluable for everyone, when it comes to self-defense, it is especially important for women! When a woman is attacked, the typical attacker isn’t trying to box or kickbox her.   While a few strikes may be involved, an larger and stronger attacker will often grab a woman and attempt to manhandle and control her until he is in a dominant position.  Our Jiu-jitsu program is the ideal solution for that type of situation.

The Smash Gyms Instructors have strong focus on safety at all times. Students will train with like-minded partners they are comfortable working with in a structured, cooperative, and fun learning environment.  Feel free to jump in and try it out!

On a historical side note for those who may not know, Brazilian Jiu-jitsu was originally designed for streetfighting and the sport evolved from that. The point system in sport BJJ is based on what was considered the most dominant positions from which to control and submit or strike an opponent in a streetfight.

Back in the early 90’s, before the UFC, the early pioneers of Jiu-jitsu in the United States made a name for themselves from challenging other styles. These challenge matches were true no holds barred fights with no gloves or any protective gear in which everything was allowed and nothing was off limits- punches, kicks, knees headbutts, elbow, groins strikes, etc….

Now, with the growth of modern MMA, BJJ works along side other martial arts. It wasn’t like this back in the early 90’s.  It was BJJ vs. everyone else.  The Gracie family had their “Gracie Challenge”, but this challenge was adopted by literally every Brazilian jiu-jitsu practitioner regardless of belt color who came to the US. There was no concept of advertising and promotion in BJJ as we know today. They got their name out simply from put out challenges and showcasing their style in actual combat.

Smash Kids represent at Makimoto Judo Club Invitational Tournament

Smash Kids represented at the 2013 Makimoto Judo Club Judo Invitational Tournament weekend! This competition was sponsored by the Vacaville Police Activites League (PAL).

This was Derek Jen’s second competition and he had an incredible performance.  He won every one of his matches in under 5 seconds and took 1st place.

Aaron Jen was in a division that was a mix of his belt level and higher.  He had a huge bracket and had 6 matches.  Aaron won all his matches and took 1st place.

Louie Noble Jr. competed in his first judo competition. Louie was going against some experienced competitors and ended up taking 3rd place!  Awesome work!

Brothers compete at the Boys & Girls Club Judo Development Tournament

Smash Gyms Kids Martial Arts students, Derek and Aaron Jen, competed this past Saturday at the San Mateo Boys and Girls Club Judo Development Tournament.  This was Derek’s first judo competition and he was in a division where he was the only white belt.  He had 7 matches, all against colored belts, and ended up taking 2nd place.  Aaron also had some really tough opponents in his division.  He won all 4 of matches and took 1st place.  Big congratulations to the brothers for taking home gold and silver!

Great performances at the Bay Area Jiu-jitsu Championships

On Sunday Nov. 18th, Smash Gyms Brazilian Jiu-jitsu students competed in the 4th Bay Area Jiu-Jitsu Championships in Hayward, CA.   The team had contestants in the kids, women, men, and no gi divisions.  At the end of the day of tough competition, our competitors earned 2 gold, 4 silver, and 2 bronze medals.  Big congratulations to all who competed.

Morning Mixed Martial Arts Fitness Classes

Sunnyvale & Santa Clara- Smash Gyms has morning MMA training from 10:30am-11:30am Monday through Friday! These beginner friendly MMA fitness classes are a great way to improve your overall fitness and functional strength while learning self-defense. The MMA class participants range from professional & amateur fighters to stay-at-home moms.

In this fun and unique fitness class participants will learn techniques, drills and workouts borrowed from a variety of disciplines. The morning MMA class teaches techniques from Boxing, Kickboxing, Jiu-Jitsu, Wrestling, and Judo. The wide variety of class formats, strength and conditioning exercises and fighting styles makes a fun and exciting class to help keep our members interested and motivated. This class has a strong emphasis and safety and welcomes all skill and fitness levels. All of our group fitness and exercise classes at Smash are all beginner friendly. The 10:30am MMA class is perfect for students, people with flexible work schedules, housewives, or anyone that sneak out of work!

Immediately following the MMA class is a Noon Jiu-Jitsu class five days a week. The Lunch time fitness and BJJ classes are some of the most popular classes at Smash! Smash Gyms Jiu-Jitsu Team Highlights from American Cup

Below are some of the highlights from The Smash Gyms Jiu-jitsu Team’s dominating performance at the American Cup in San Jose at Independence High School. A vast majority of our Jiu-Jitsu students choose not to compete and grapple recreationally for fun and fitness. Those that choose to compete have done very well. In our beginner friendly BJJ program we do not push our students to compete, but if they choose to we help to provide them all the tools necessary to be successful.

Smash is fortunate to have top level Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu Instruction with very high level wrestling and judo combined into a comprehensive grappling program that will safely progress beginners at an accelerated pace. Our system is designed as a path for the average person to progress safely and quickly into an expert grappler.

 

Women Only Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu Class Now at Smash!

Smash Gyms Women’s Only Brazilian Jiu-jitsu Class on Sundays from 10am-12pm. The class is currently FREE to all women who are currently members of any Smash Gyms program! Drop-ins for non-members is $5.

All Women are welcomed! This beginner friendly class and is a introduction to the Smash Gyms Jiu-jitsu program in a non-threatening and friendly environment. It is also a great way for the Women’s BJJ Community in the Bay Area to meet and train together! Women from San Jose, Santa Clara, Sunnyvale and Mountain View feel free to join and have a great time.

Smash Gyms Jiu-jitsu student Crystina Coats is leading the class. Crystina is a BJJ purple belt training at Smash Gyms under Michael Jen.

Crystina first began training jiu-jitsu under Carlson Gracie in 2003. Since then, she has competed and medaled in many women’s grappling and BJJ competitions including major tournaments such as Grapplers Quest West, Pan Ams of Submission Grappling, Best of the West, and On The Mat American International Championships. Crystina qualified and competed in the prestigious 2006 North American ADCC trials in New Jersey. Crystina earned a spot on the USA Team as an alternate and competitor at the Fila World Grappling Games 2007 in Antalya, Turkey.

During her BJJ career Crystina has not only earned over 30 medals in BJJ competitions but has also trained under some of the best instructors in the Jiu-jitsu world. Before training at Smash Gyms Crystina was a student under Carlson Gracie, Rodrigo Medeiros, Dean Lister, Elias Gallegos and others. Crystina helped start a successful Women Only BJJ program at her past school and is eager to pass along her grappling knowledge to women in this new beginner friendly class at Smash Gyms!

Jiu-Jitsu

The Smash Gyms Jiu-jitsu program includes a systematic blend of Brazilian Jiu-jitsu, Wrestling, and Judo into a complete grappling system that will safely progress beginners at an accelerated pace. Our system is designed as a path for the average person to progress safely and quickly into an expert grappler. The system has proven to be highly effective in both self-defense and Brazilian Jiu-jitsu sport competition. You will find our unique Jiu-jitsu classes are presented in a format highly conducive to learning while maintaining a strong focus on safety. All the evening classes are taught by Michael Jen who is 3rd degree BJJ Blackbelt and widely recognized as one of the most technical and most experienced BJJ instructors in the U.S.

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

Classes typically include a full hour of technique, drilling and instruction followed by a half hour of structured sparring under the supervision of the instructors. Open mat follows nightly.

Self-Defense & Krav Maga

The Smash Gyms Self-Defense System is a unique program designed to quickly teach every student the skills and knowledge to effectively protect oneself.  This beginner friendly system will quickly allow students become proficient the intricacies of all aspects of personal protection regardless of gender, experience, size, strength, or fitness level.

Krav Maga is the official self-defense system of the Israeli Defense Forces (IDF), Israeli Anti-terrorist Units, and various branches of the Israeli Security Forces. Krav Maga was developed in Israel, under realistic battlefield and street conditions. This comprehensive system of martial arts has recently been adopted by and taught to many law enforcement and military organizations, including the US Air Marshals, F.B.I., C.I.A, D.E.A., U.S. Secret Service, and numerous Police Departments.

 

Kickboxing

Our kickboxing program will help you get fit, have fun, and learn kickboxing! Whether you are a beginner or an expert, our experienced instructors will make sure you get a great workout in addition to improving your technique. You will be challenged by structured yet fun kickboxing and strength and conditioning routines in a safe and encouraging environment. We welcome all fitness and skill levels.

All of our Kickboxing classes use pads and mitts giving you a more satisfying and fun workout.  Hitting the pads improves your muscle tone and your cardio endurance, not to mention in 1 hour it burns up to 1200 calories – nothing else comes close.

Our kickboxing staff are very experienced and have acquired the best techniques from Muy Thai, San Shou, Shotokan Karate, and MMA. Kettlebell Training

Kettlebells have been popular in Russia for a long time, but have become very popular in the U.S. recently due to the intense and productive workouts you can get while using kettlebells.

One of the unique benefits of kettlebells is the improvements to both cardiovascular and anabolic systems. Kettlebell users also have tremendous gains in overall functional strength. Simply put you can increase your overall fitness and tone up your muscles with kettlebells if used correctly.

Our program will teach you all the details on advanced and basic lifts and techniques. Our kettlebell classes have a strong focus on proper body mechanics and real Russian kettlebell techniques.

 

SMASH STRENGTH AND CONDITIONING:

Anyone can join this beginner friendly class! All classes are taught by by CrossFit certified instructors and personal training veterans. Every class is like a personal training session. The Smash Gyms Strength and Conditioning Program is for those individuals with goals to reach their personal maximum fitness potential. While maintaining a strong focus on safety, this beginner friendly program will teach you how to train like a professional athlete in a fun and supportive environment.
