Sam Spengler’s New MMA Classes at Smash Gyms

Beginning Monday February 10th 2014 Sam "The Ram" Spengler will begin teaching beginner friendly MMA Fitness & Self-Defense Classes at the new San Jose Smash Gyms. Smash Gym San Jose is located in Evergreen right down the street from Quimby Oak Middle School where Sam has taught for over 12 years.

As a veteran PE teacher, wrestling coach, athlete, and role model Sam Spengler has contributed to the East San Jose and Evergreen community in many ways. As a teacher Sam's positive attitude is contagious and he is extremely popular with his students and fellow staff. Sam has had huge success as the Quimby Oak Head Wrestling Coach. He has led the Quimby Oak Lobo's wrestling team to win their league for 12 years in a row. As a coach Sam has helped students fulfill their potential by guiding them in their athletic careers. He has created countless champions. Many of Sam's students have gone on to receive scholarships, become coaches themselves, and be contributing members of the community.

Sam has been wrestling since he was 5 years old. As a senior in high school he earned a bronze medal in the Montana State Wrestling Championships and also received a scholarship to play college football where he earned a degree in Education. A seasoned martial arts veteran, Sam has been competing in kickboxing and MMA since 2003. He began training kickboxing over 10 years ago at West Valley Community College with Brian Kuhn.  Shortly after Brian introduced Sam to Cung Le's Martial Arts in San Jose where Sam began training MMA. Sam continued his MMA training with Cung Le and supplemented his training by learning BJJ at Smash Gyms. Sam has trained with many world-class competitors and instructors over the last 10 years.

Sam has competed in hundreds of wrestling matches, 22 kickboxing matches, dozens of Brazilian Jiu-jitsu tournaments and 9 MMA fights. Sam is also the head of his Physical Education Department in San Jose. This competitive experience in kickboxing, wrestling, brazilian jiu-jitsu and mixed martial arts coupled with his teaching background lends him the unique ability to transfer his knowledge to eager students in a structured and systematic way. Sam's organized and fun classes will help students of all skill and fitness levels learn technique and improve their fitness level due to a format and curriculum designed to create an optimal learning environment. Sam is happy and excited to pass on his experience and unique skill set to the Evergreen and East San Jose community at Smash Gyms.

Two brand new evening classes starting in May! Both classes are a great workout and fun!

Our Self-Defense & Combatives classes will provide members with top quality instruction in a wide variety of subjects. This beginner friendly & new class will feature our Women's Personal Protection curriculum as well as Jiu-Jitsu Combatives (the base of US Army Combatives).  You will recieve  instruction from experts in a wide variety of subjects. The various classes that make up the Smash Gyms Self Defense System will not only develop a student's skills, but also help them get into great shape.  Due to the fact that each class addresses a specific and different aspect of self-defense, the workouts are fun, interesting, and challenge the body. These classes will make anyone aware, ferocious, ready and in shape to defend themselves in any situation.

Due to popular demand we have also added evening Mixed Martial Arts Classes! This program is truly a mix of martial arts and does not necessarily refer to the sport of MMA. Each subject at Smash is covered by expert in his field so this class is an amazing compliment to our Self-Defense and Combatives class. The Smash Gyms MMA program includes a systematic blend of Brazilian Jiu-jitsu, Wrestling, Judo, Kickboxing & Self-Defense techniques into a comprehensive weekly training program that will safely progress beginners at an accelerated pace. Our classes are designed as a path for the average person to progress safely and quickly into a well-rounded and fit martial artist. Our programs have proven to be highly effective in Self-Defense, Kickboxing, MMA, and Brazilian Jiu-jitsu sport competition. These uniquely structured classes are presented in a format highly conducive to learning while maintaining a strong focus on safety.

If you really want to learn any subject you need to see an authority on the matter. No single fighting style has true expertise in every situation or subject matter. Anyone that has studied martial arts or fighting knows this is true. If you look at the best professional martial artist and fighters in the world they have sought out experts in each subject. They have separate expert coaches from each discipline.  We used this principle to create our Mixed Martial Arts and Self Defense & Combatives programs. Every class subject will be taught by an expert for the highest possible level of instruction. In both classes gaining actual fighting ability is of primary concern while maintaining a strong focus on fun, fitness and safety!

Jiu-Jitsu

The Smash Gyms Jiu-jitsu program includes a systematic blend of Brazilian Jiu-jitsu, Wrestling, and Judo into a complete grappling system that will safely progress beginners at an accelerated pace. Our system is designed as a path for the average person to progress safely and quickly into an expert grappler. The system has proven to be highly effective in both self-defense and Brazilian Jiu-jitsu sport competition. You will find our unique Jiu-jitsu classes are presented in a format highly conducive to learning while maintaining a strong focus on safety. All the evening classes are taught by Michael Jen who is 3rd degree BJJ Blackbelt and widely recognized as one of the most technical and most experienced BJJ instructors in the U.S.

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

Classes typically include a full hour of technique, drilling and instruction followed by a half hour of structured sparring under the supervision of the instructors. Open mat follows nightly.

Self-Defense & Krav Maga

The Smash Gyms Self-Defense System is a unique program designed to quickly teach every student the skills and knowledge to effectively protect oneself.  This beginner friendly system will quickly allow students become proficient the intricacies of all aspects of personal protection regardless of gender, experience, size, strength, or fitness level.

Single attacker or multiple?  Weapons or empty hands?  Standing or on the ground?  Striking or grappling?  True self-defense situations are unpredictable cannot be defined by a single scenario.

With this in mind, the Smash Gyms Self-Defense System incorporates and combines different martial arts that have consistently proven to be the most successful in realistic conditions.

By  tapping into the deep knowledge of multiple experts who have spent their lives specializing in specific forms and ranges of combat, students can be assured they are learning the most effect techniques and training methods that can be adapted for any situation.  In addition, students will learn to handle the stress and pressure of a sudden, violent encounter in a safe and progressive manner.

Krav Maga is the official self-defense system of the Israeli Defense Forces (IDF), Israeli Anti-terrorist Units, and various branches of the Israeli Security Forces. Krav Maga was developed in Israel, under realistic battlefield and street conditions. This comprehensive system of martial arts has recently been adopted by and taught to many law enforcement and military organizations, including the US Air Marshals, F.B.I., C.I.A, D.E.A., U.S. Secret Service, and numerous Police Departments.

 

Kickboxing

Our kickboxing program will help you get fit, have fun, and learn kickboxing! Whether you are a beginner or an expert, our experienced instructors will make sure you get a great workout in addition to improving your technique. You will be challenged by structured yet fun kickboxing and strength and conditioning routines in a safe and encouraging environment. We welcome all fitness and skill levels.

All of our Kickboxing classes use pads and mitts giving you a more satisfying and fun workout.  Hitting the pads improves your muscle tone and your cardio endurance, not to mention in 1 hour it burns up to 1200 calories – nothing else comes close.

Our kickboxing staff are very experienced and have acquired the best techniques from Muy Thai, San Shou, Shotokan Karate, and MMA. Kids Martial Arts and Fitness

Kettlebell Training

Kettlebells have been popular in Russia for a long time, but have become very popular in the U.S. recently due to the intense and productive workouts you can get while using kettlebells.

One of the unique benefits of kettlebells is the improvements to both cardiovascular and anabolic systems. Kettlebell users also have tremendous gains in overall functional strength. Simply put you can increase your overall fitness and tone up your muscles with kettlebells if used correctly.

Our program will teach you all the details on advanced and basic lifts and techniques. Our kettlebell classes have a strong focus on proper body mechanics and real Russian kettlebell techniques.

 

SMASH STRENGTH AND CONDITIONING:

Anyone can join this beginner friendly class! All classes are taught by by CrossFit certified instructors and personal training veterans. Every class is like a personal training session. The Smash Gyms Strength and Conditioning Program is for those individuals with goals to reach their personal maximum fitness potential. While maintaining a strong focus on safety, this beginner friendly program will teach you how to train like a professional athlete in a fun and supportive environment. The program was designed to teach members proper strength and conditioning techniques and principles while pushing them physically and mentally.
