Coach Miranda 'Killa' Cayabyab earned the moniker early on in her competitive career by the tenacity in which she approached her training and the intensity she brought to the ring. Now retired from Professional Muay Thai, she has put her focus on raising her children and developing her talents as a Coach. But let me start at the beginning to give you a better understanding of why she is so awesome.
In 2004 Miranda found herself in an unhealthy place. Out of shape and overweight, she had lost her confidence. She decided to make a change and found herself in my Cardio Kickboxing Class! Though it was difficult, she loved the it! Miranda dedicated herself to getting back in shape and that's where it all began!
A year and 40lbs later Miranda decided to take on new challenge, Muay Thai. She overcame her fears and began to love challenge of stepping into the ring. Killa quickly established herself as a legit competitor with a fierce heart within the fight community. Miranda won 3 National Titles as an amateur.
During her amateur career, she took some time off to give birth to her second child Aurora Hope. For most, having a full-time job, 2 children, and training full time as a competitive fighter would be too much. Miranda not only was able successful with all those responsibilities but during this time she also decided to get a Certified CrossFit Trainer. Always looking for new challenges she then decided that she wanted to take her Muay Thai career further and turn professional.
In November, 2013 Miranda made her Professional Muay Thai debut for Lion Fight Promotions. What most don't know is that she had completely blown out her ACL & PCL just 3 weeks before. Miranda refused to pull out of the Fight. Her determination and skills were on full display that night. Despite her injuries she won a unanimous decision victory. Her family, friends. and team were very proud.
Now she is entering the next stage of her Fitness and Martial Arts journey. Already coaching Fitness Classes for Smash Gyms Milpitas, she will start teaching Muay Thai Fundamentals on Thursdays. Her passion and knowledge for the Art of 8 Limbs will be a great addition to Smash Gyms. We cannot wait for you to try her class!

"One day my cousin Desiree Mendel told me about Smash gyms, and started up martial arts again. At this point I was a little over 200lbs of partially fat and muscle. After meeting my coach Brian, he sparked my interest in competing in kickboxing. I asked how much I should weigh, and he suggested at my height, I should get down to at least 145lbs. That was a goal that no one, even myself thought I could make. However with tons of hard work and staying consistent on a balanced, healthy diet, I continued to take other classes Smash gyms had to offer such as kettle bells, strength and conditioning, bootcamp classes and yoga classes. A quick update on all these awesome new kickboxing classes. Before the New Year, Smash only had two kickboxing classes throughout the week. In 2012 every kickboxing student will have access to at least 4 classes throughout the week. We now have kickboxing classes Monday through Saturday! To accommodate everyone's goals and all fitness and skill levels there are now 3 different kickboxing Levels at Smash. All three levels may not be for everyone but all three are for someone.
Smashfit Level 1 - This is what we've always had and there are no real changes to these classes. You will continue to learn and progress in technique and get a great workout without ever getting punched. The focus will be on getting a great workout and refining offensive technique as you develop.
Level 2 Kickboxing - This will be an advanced kickboxing class. There will be a test in February for students that are interested in the Level 2 classes. If you choose to test for Level 2 you must get headgear, shinguards, your own gloves and a mouth piece. Get these asap! The test will consist of the combinations, technique, and timed body weight exercises to ensure those students are at a minimum required fitness level. We will announce the test dates soon!
All Levels Classes - These will continue to be on Friday and Saturday will focus on both conditioning and technique (without sparring) and be similar to the classes Brian is currently instructing.
If you enrolled in the kickboxing program you are welcomed to attend the Level 1 and All Level Classes with no testing. To prepare for the Level 2 Testing in February all kickboxing students may attend all the classes until the first test. Once testing is done only those advanced students will have access to the Monday and Wednesday classes.
Tuesdays and Thursdays is SmashFit Level 1 Kickboxing (pads and mitts; no contact); Level 2 (advanced) is on Monday and Wednesday (pads and mitts; light sparring); All Levels is on Friday and Saturday.
SmashFit Level 1- Tuesday and Thursday at 6pm
Level 2 - Monday and Wednesday- 6pm
All Levels- Friday at 6:00pm (changing to 6:30pm on February 3rd) and Saturday at 12:00pm
Open Sparring- Saturday at 1:00pm and Friday at 7:30pm

The Smash Gyms Jiu-jitsu program includes a systematic blend of Brazilian Jiu-jitsu, Wrestling, and Judo into a complete grappling system that will safely progress beginners at an accelerated pace. Our system is designed as a path for the average person to progress safely and quickly into an expert grappler. The system has proven to be highly effective in both self-defense and Brazilian Jiu-jitsu sport competition. You will find our unique Jiu-jitsu classes are presented in a format highly conducive to learning while maintaining a strong focus on safety. All the evening classes are taught by Michael Jen who is 3rd degree BJJ Blackbelt and widely recognized as one of the most technical and most experienced BJJ instructors in the U.S.
Classes typically include a full hour of technique, drilling and instruction followed by a half hour of structured sparring under the supervision of the instructors. Open mat follows nightly.

Krav Maga is the official self-defense system of the Israeli Defense Forces (IDF), Israeli Anti-terrorist Units, and various branches of the Israeli Security Forces. Krav Maga was developed in Israel, under realistic battlefield and street conditions. This comprehensive system of martial arts has recently been adopted by and taught to many law enforcement and military organizations, including the US Air Marshals, F.B.I., C.I.A, D.E.A., U.S. Secret Service, and numerous Police Departments.

Kettlebells have been popular in Russia for a long time, but have become very popular in the U.S. recently due to the intense and productive workouts you can get while using kettlebells.
One of the unique benefits of kettlebells is the improvements to both cardiovascular and anabolic systems. Kettlebell users also have tremendous gains in overall functional strength. Simply put you can increase your overall fitness and tone up your muscles with kettlebells if used correctly.

Starting in January we have a new addition to the talented staff of instructors at Smash Gyms. Brian Kuhn joins the kickboxing program as a Level 2 Kickboxing Instructor and will be teaching 4 days a week. He will be working with Sam Spengler, Rose Jen, Michael Jen and Naomi Harel to take our kickboxing program to the next level. We're very excited to have another experienced and dedicated instructor help lead this new program!
Brian Kuhn has been a life-long student, competitor and instructor in the Bay Area martial arts community. He has close to 20 years of teaching experience in a variety of different disciplines including karate, kickboxing, MMA and self-defense. His passion for martial arts and enthusiasm is known to be contagious in every class he teaches. Brian has spent the better part of the last two decades passing on his vast knowledge and skills as an Instructor at West Valley College and Saratoga Community Center.
Brian's versatile and comprehensive martial arts resume includes a Fourth Degree Black Belt in Shotokan Karate, Brown Belt in Judo, Blue Belt in Brazilian Jiu-jitsu, and competitive Kickboxing and San Shou experience. A veteran competitor of Karate, Judo, Jiu-jitsu and Kickboxing tournaments Brian showed composure, experience and technique on his way to winning a gold medal at the 2011 BJJ US Open for Smash Gyms.
Brian earned his Bachelor of Arts Degree majoring in Kinesiology at San Jose State and is also a Certified Strength and Conditioning Specialists. With his extensive experience, systematic training techniques and passion for teaching, Brian's goal is to develop each Smash Gyms kickboxing class into an exciting and dynamic learning experience.
Kickboxing classes are Monday-Friday at 6pm and Saturday at 12:00pm.

Smash Gyms also presented Jacob Palomino with an award for his contributions to our Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu and wrestling program. Jacob represented Smash Gyms while winning a Championship at the Brazilian Jiu-jitsu US Open in San Jose, California. He also tirelessly helps people in our grappling program learn his sophisticated and technical system of wrestling that he perfected on his way to becoming a Four-time California Wrestling High School State Championships Finalist.

This realistic system of fighting with a focus on self-defense is taught by the 28-year practitioner .
