Weekends full of BJJ and Weightlifting Competitions!

A few weeks ago, Sam Jung represented Smash Gyms at the East Bay Brazilian Jiu-jitsu Open.  Sam put on a great performance and placed 1st in the gi division and 3rd in the no gi division.  That same weekend, Jonathan Bialoglovski competed in the Calfornia Black Belt League: Victory Challenge and place 1st in his division.

Then this past weekend, Christina Apatow represented Smash Gyms Women's BJJ and competed in the KO Finisher Series Submission Only Tournament.  With no competitors to go against in her division, Christina moved up 2 weight classes. She did awesome and placed 3rd.  Christina finished two of her matches by armbar and gi choke.  The most memorable moment was when her opponent refused to tap to the gi choke and ended up being put completely unconscious.

While Christina was competing in BJJ, Smash Gyms' Strength & Conditioning instructor, James Cebedo, competed in the Redwood Empire Weightlifting Competition.  James threw up some big weight and placed 2nd in his division despite only weighing 157lbs in the 170lbs division! This was James' first weightlifting competition so he decided not to cut any weight and still took home a silver medal!

A big congratulations to all the competitors!

Check out the highlights of Christina at the KO Finisher Series!

Great performances at the San Mateo Boys & Girls Club Judo Development Tournament

Louie Noble Jr., Derek Jen, and Aaron Jen competed in the May 2013 San Mateo Boys and Girls Club Judo Developmental Tournament.  This is a small informal tournament put on 4 times a year for kids to give beginners competition experience.

Aaron was in a division in which he rolled though all 4 of his matches with ease and used the opportunity to try techniques he had not pulled off in competition before.  Derek was in a really tough division.  Not only was his division filled with kids his belt level and higher, but many of the kids were also significantly  heavier.  Derek ended up winning 4 out of his 6 matches.  Louie Noble Jr. dominated and won all 6 of his matches by either pinning or throwing his opponents for ippon.

In the end, Louie and Aaron placed 1st and Derek placed 3rd in their respective divisions.

Top 7 Reasons Why Women Should Take Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu for Self-Defense!

Smash Gyms Women Self-Defense Program combines Krav Maga, Mixed Martial Arts, and Jiu-Jitsu instruction for best and most comprehensive women's program in the Bay Area. Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu is often overlooked but completely necessary for self-defense training.

Below are 7 key Reasons why Brazilian Jiu-jitsu should be a part of a woman’s self defense training:

1) In the situation in which a woman is forced to defend herself against a man, it is unlikely that the goal of the man will be to trade strikes like boxing or kickboxing style match. In the event of a sexual assault, an assailant will most likely attempt to coerce or force a woman from a standing position to being onto her back or prone.

2) The assailant will most likely want to control the situation using his size and strength, especially if the male assailant does not have a weapon. This generally leads to a grappling situation.

3) In BJJ, the “guard” is the position in which an individual is on their back with an opponent between their legs. The average untrained person would consider that to be one of the worst positions to be in, however, it is considered a superior position of control in BJJ where countless techniques can be applied.

4) BJJ techniques are based upon manipulating the structure of the human body. This means that the effectiveness of techniques is not dependent on an opponent’s pain tolerance which can be unpredictable.

5) Grappling in BJJ allows students to feel full uncooperative resistance from training partners on a regular basis. Every single person who has never felt such energy and resistance exerted upon them tends to immediately become extremely tense, panic, and forget everything they have been taught. In addition, the adrenaline rush and crash tends to cause most untrained people to become completely exhausted in a very short period of time regardless of their fitness level. BJJ training teaches students to relax more and be able to think clearer in such a situation.

6) If you train BJJ you will build confidence. Predators are looking for victims not confident martial artist. The effectiveness of BJJ helps it's practitioners build realistic confidence like no other art. Every woman that trains Jiu-Jitsu long enough will learn to control and force bigger, stronger men to submit. This helps a person carry the confidence to deter any assailant.

7) BJJ is great for fitness and weight loss. Individuals that begin training Jiu-jitsu a few times a week can lose 30lbs in two months. Several of our students have transformed their bodies by consistently training 3-4 times a week.

A well rounded self-defense program should include training for situations standing up as well as the ground. For women, it is often best to be able to remain standing and create an opportunity that will allow them to flee. For an untrained individual, being on the ground is usually one of the most uncomfortable situations to deal with, but the addition of Brazilian Jiu-jitsu training can allow women to overcome the difficultly of being on the ground in an effective manner.

Smash Gyms' World-Class BJJ instruction combined with our exceptional Krav Maga program will prepare you for every self-defense situation.

We offer day and evening classes 7 days a week. Women's Only Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu is on Sundays at 10am. Please see the link below to sign up for a free week.

2011 Was an Amazing Year for the Smash Gyms BJJ Program! Watch out 2012!

2011 was an amazing year for all the programs at Smash. I'd like to take a moment and point out the amazing growth of our BJJ program in particular.

The Smash Gyms Jiu-jitsu program is headed by Michael Jen. Michael had been teaching a small group of loyal students out of his garage for nearly 10 years. Most of his students grappled recreationally for exercise, fun and self-defense. He did have one student that liked to compete in Sport BJJ. Seo Perales was only the second person ever to be promoted to Black Belt by Michael. Seo took 3rd and 5th in the World Championships and won his division in the US Open twice. Michael's students were all complimented on their solid fundamentals when training at other schools and Seo's success was impressive but still Michael was largely unknown in the younger Sport Jiu-Jitsu world. Michael was one of the first 50 American BJJ Blackbelts but only the "old school" guys knew who he was since he had been not publicly teaching for ten years.

The Smash Gyms Jiu jitsu program officially started in January 2011. We were excited and happy to share the system of BJJ that we had spent 10 years in Michael's garage helping to design. The system went through many iterations where techniques were changed, thrown out, and replaced. We were confident that we now had a system of teaching BJJ that would help the average person turn into a very good grappler in a short amount of time. We also knew it would help a talented person turn into a monster even faster.

Many of Michael's top students came and helped lead the new program at Smash. Seo moved to the Bay Area for a few months to help get the program started. Mario Rios a brown belt, was in almost every class teaching the system of jiu-jitsu to beginners. Louie Noble and Andrew Yao purples and all of our blue belts were happy to help everyone. Before opening Smash we were fortunate to have relationships with talented people and training partners with a variety of skill-sets and backgrounds. They all came to help. My younger brother Eli who was a D1 College wrestler came in and combined his wrestling with our BJJ and made some noise. Pretty soon we had state champions like Jacob Palomino, all-american wrestlers and Judokas like Patrick Kong and pro-fighters like Sam Spengler all join the team to train, learn and pass on their existing skills to the students at Smash.

With such a great group of talented and giving instructors our brand new Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu program literally shocked the Sport BJJ world in 2011. The very first team tournament the Smash competitors attended they brought home 3 Gold Medals. Sam, Seo, and Patrick dominated their divisions at BJJ by the Bay. After a few months the influx of new and motivated faces found Smash to be a place where they could learn and excel. Guys like David, Sam Jung, Rogelio, Joe, Harry and Ruben joined and helped rally the team. A couple months later was BJJ by the Sea and we brought home 7 medals. 4 gold and 3 silver. Exceptional growth but it did not stop there. In July Smash brought a team to the San Jose Open and won it. The Smash Gyms competitors brought home 8 Gold medals, 2 silver, 2 bronze and the Team Trophy. It was phenomenal feeling to have such remarkable success as a new gym in the Bay Area, which is known worldwide to be a BJJ Mecca of top schools. How would we do at a national level tournament though? We found out at the US Open 2011. Smash Gyms had 6 people place in the top 3 at this nationally recognized tournament. This is unheard of for a brand new school.

We are incredibly proud of each and every person on our team. Even more fulfilling than tournament wins is watching someone go from "the nail" to "the hammer" during a practice. 2011 was amazing because of everyone that stepped on the mat and tried to help each other get better. There are too many people to thank in this post but I can honestly say I've learned from every single one of the students at Smash. Thanks to everyone that has helped us with the struggle to improve ourselves both on and off the mat. With everyone's help 2012 will be even more amazing.
