james

James Cebedo is a testament to how proper fitness training can be life-changing. He was very overweight and out of shape in high school and decided to make a change for good. In one year he transformed his body. He lost over 40lbs and gained an impressive amount of lean muscle mass. Training and studying the different philosophies of fitness training has become his life mission. His years of experience in bodybuilding, power lifting, circuit training, rock climbing, Crossfit competitor and as a Personal Trainer have provided him with a wealth of experience. James is joining the staff of Smash Gyms instructors is to help people of all fitness levels achieve their fitness goals.

James competed in the 2008, 2010 and 2011 Annual Crossfit Games. His impressive resume includes a 455lb deadlift, 365 lb full squat, 120lb weighted pull up at bodyweight less than 160lbs. James has also hiked Mount Dana, the 2nd highest peak in Yosemite at 13000 feet!

Cainan had been winning Track and Field and USA Wrestling events since he was seven years old. He set numerous school records in his track and field career before focusing on wrestling where he was a 4-time state qualifier and multi-time state placer along with becoming a freestyle all-american.  He wrestled at Michigan State University before deciding to pursue his Electrical Engineering degree full-time.

Cainan discovered Crossfit in 2009 at a time when he was rediscovering his personal health and passion for competitive sports.  He became refocused on his strength and conditioning and his entire lifestyle through a new found energy.  Since 2009 time, Cainan has drastically improved his strength and conditioning resume.  Some of his personal bests are a 425lb back squat, 455lb deadlift, 315lb full clean, 285lb Clean and Jerk, 215lb snatch and 2:51 Fran time at 170lbs.  Cainan is a Crossfit Certified Instructor. He has also continued to compete on the Olympic Freestyle Wrestling competitions in major tournaments such as the Sunkist International and US Open. Most recently he is using his strong wrestling background to transition into the Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu at Smash Gyms.

Functional Strength classes in Santa Clara, Sunnyvale, Milpitas and Mountain View!

What is Functional Strength?

Strong is the new skinny! Fitness professionals and personal trainers are teaching people the importance of improving their strength to reach their fitness goals. Trainers are particularly fond of using the term 'functional strength'. When most people hear the word “strength”, weightlifting and bodybuilding are often the first things to come to mind. However, functional strength is very different from weightlifting strength. Most traditional weight training exercises are done to develop physical aesthetics. Of course bodybuilders are not weak, however, the strength from standard weight lifting does not always translate over as effectively in real life as someone who trains for functional strength.

A great example is the World’s Strongest Man contest. Rather than curling dumbbells, bench pressing barbells, and pumping out reps on a machine, the World’s Strongest Man contest has competitor lifting rocks, pulling cars, flipping huge tires, etc… If you look at the competitors in these contests, though they are big guys, they look nothing like professional bodybuilders. A few professional bodybuilders have participated in these contests in the past and most had very limited success. I am not saying that in order to have functional strength, you need to be big like the competitors in a World’s Strongest Man contest as there are many other examples of functional strength. I am using that as an example with people of comparable mass to a professional bodybuilder to show how training for looks versus training for function can directly translate to performance.

Functional strength not about how big or defined a muscle looks, but rather having strength in the movements of your body that is used in daily activities, sports, and another other natural forms of physical exertion outside of the gym. When you look at many standard weight training exercises, the movements are not natural if you look at it closely. Let’s take the flat bench press as an example. Most people see the flat bench press as simply a pushing motion. However, if you really dissect the flat bench press, you will notice that your back is against an immovable object (the bench) and you are pushing (the weight) directly against the force of gravity. When in your regular life do you find yourself with an immovable object against your back and pushing directly against the force of gravity? The answer is probably…never. So, the strength developed for the flat bench press is simply strength to bench press and developing muscle mass for looks. This exercise and the strength developed from this exercises is useless and is not functional for most people and, especially, athletes.

Having functional strength can really be seen when doing movements or activities outside a person’s norm. People with functional strength tend to be the ones who are a lot stronger than they look. I have grappled thousands of people throughout my martial arts career. Interestingly, some of the strongest opponents I have grappled against were gymnasts, yoga instructors, and people who did hard manual labor for a living. None of these people ever did standard weight training and very few were bigger than me, but when I grappled against them, each one felt like I was wrestling a bull.

The Smash Gyms fitness program (SmashFit) includes a wide variety of group fitness classes designed to learn a skill, lose weight and improve your functional strength. All age groups and fitness levels can improve their overall fitness in a safe and supportive environment. The group classes at Smash have a strong emphasis on proper body mechanics has translated to great results and a very low injury rate for our students. Professional instructors guide new members on a safe path to fitness regardless of athleticism or prior experience. Our beginner friendly programs allow anyone to learn, get fit, and have fun!

Beginner Friendly, Advanced, and All Levels Kickboxing Classes at Smash

A quick update on all these awesome new kickboxing classes. Before the New Year, Smash only had two kickboxing classes throughout the week. In 2012 every kickboxing student will have access to at least 4 classes throughout the week.  We now have kickboxing classes Monday through Saturday! To accommodate everyone's goals and all fitness and skill levels there are now 3 different kickboxing Levels at Smash. All three levels may not be for everyone but all three are for someone. 🙂

Smashfit Level 1 - This is what we've always had and there are no real changes to these classes. You will continue to learn and progress in technique and get a great workout without ever getting punched. The focus will be on getting a great workout and refining offensive technique as you develop.

Level 2 Kickboxing - This will be an advanced kickboxing class. There will be a test in February for students that are interested in the Level 2 classes. If you choose to test for Level 2 you must get headgear, shinguards, your own gloves and a mouth piece. Get these asap! The test will consist of the combinations, technique, and timed body weight exercises to ensure those students are at a minimum required fitness level. We will announce the test dates soon!

All Levels Classes - These will continue to be on Friday and Saturday will focus on both conditioning and technique (without sparring) and be similar to the classes Brian is currently instructing.

If you enrolled in the kickboxing program you are welcomed to attend the Level 1 and All Level Classes with no testing. To prepare for the Level 2 Testing in February all kickboxing students may attend all the classes until the first test. Once testing is done only those advanced students will have access to the Monday and Wednesday classes.

Tuesdays and Thursdays is SmashFit Level 1 Kickboxing (pads and mitts; no contact); Level 2 (advanced) is on Monday and Wednesday (pads and mitts; light sparring); All Levels is on Friday and Saturday.

SmashFit Level 1- Tuesday and Thursday at 6pm

Level 2 - Monday and Wednesday- 6pm

All Levels- Friday at 6:00pm (changing to 6:30pm on February 3rd) and Saturday at 12:00pm

Open Sparring- Saturday at 1:00pm and Friday at 7:30pm

Jiu-Jitsu

The Smash Gyms Jiu-jitsu program includes a systematic blend of Brazilian Jiu-jitsu, Wrestling, and Judo into a complete grappling system that will safely progress beginners at an accelerated pace. Our system is designed as a path for the average person to progress safely and quickly into an expert grappler. The system has proven to be highly effective in both self-defense and Brazilian Jiu-jitsu sport competition. You will find our unique Jiu-jitsu classes are presented in a format highly conducive to learning while maintaining a strong focus on safety. All the evening classes are taught by Michael Jen who is 3rd degree BJJ Blackbelt and widely recognized as one of the most technical and most experienced BJJ instructors in the U.S.

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

Classes typically include a full hour of technique, drilling and instruction followed by a half hour of structured sparring under the supervision of the instructors. Open mat follows nightly.

Self-Defense & Krav Maga

The Smash Gyms Self-Defense System is a unique program designed to quickly teach every student the skills and knowledge to effectively protect oneself.  This beginner friendly system will quickly allow students become proficient the intricacies of all aspects of personal protection regardless of gender, experience, size, strength, or fitness level.

Single attacker or multiple?  Weapons or empty hands?  Standing or on the ground?  Striking or grappling?  True self-defense situations are unpredictable cannot be defined by a single scenario.

With this in mind, the Smash Gyms Self-Defense System incorporates and combines different martial arts that have consistently proven to be the most successful in realistic conditions.

By  tapping into the deep knowledge of multiple experts who have spent their lives specializing in specific forms and ranges of combat, students can be assured they are learning the most effect techniques and training methods that can be adapted for any situation.  In addition, students will learn to handle the stress and pressure of a sudden, violent encounter in a safe and progressive manner.

No previous training is necessary and anyone can learn this deadly system! Krav Maga is the official self-defense system of the Israeli Defense Forces (IDF), Israeli Anti-terrorist Units, and various branches of the Israeli Security Forces. Krav Maga was developed in Israel, under realistic battlefield and street conditions. This comprehensive system of martial arts has recently been adopted by and taught to many law enforcement and military organizations, including the US Air Marshals, F.B.I., C.I.A, D.E.A., U.S. Secret Service, and numerous Police Departments.

 

Kickboxing

Our kickboxing program will help you get fit, have fun, and learn kickboxing! Whether you are a beginner or an expert, our experienced instructors will make sure you get a great workout in addition to improving your technique. You will be challenged by structured yet fun kickboxing and strength and conditioning routines in a safe and encouraging environment. We welcome all fitness and skill levels.

All of our Kickboxing classes use pads and mitts giving you a more satisfying and fun workout.  Hitting the pads improves your muscle tone and your cardio endurance, not to mention in 1 hour it burns up to 1200 calories – nothing else comes close.

Our kickboxing staff are very experienced and have acquired the best techniques from Muy Thai, San Shou, Shotokan Karate, and MMA. Kettlebell Training

Kettlebells have been popular in Russia for a long time, but have become very popular in the U.S. recently due to the intense and productive workouts you can get while using kettlebells.

One of the unique benefits of kettlebells is the improvements to both cardiovascular and anabolic systems. Kettlebell users also have tremendous gains in overall functional strength. Simply put you can increase your overall fitness and tone up your muscles with kettlebells if used correctly.

Our program will teach you all the details on advanced and basic lifts and techniques. Our kettlebell classes have a strong focus on proper body mechanics and real Russian kettlebell techniques.

Brian Kuhn added to Smash Gyms staff as Level 2 Kickboxing Instructor!

Starting in January we have a new addition to the talented staff of instructors at Smash GymsBrian Kuhn joins the kickboxing program as a Level 2 Kickboxing Instructor and will be teaching 4 days a week. He will be working with Sam SpenglerRose JenMichael Jen and Naomi Harel to take our kickboxing program to the next level. We're very excited to have another experienced and dedicated instructor help lead this new program!

Brian Kuhn has been a life-long student, competitor and instructor in the Bay Area martial arts community. He has close to 20 years of teaching experience in a variety of different disciplines including karate, kickboxing, MMA and self-defense. His passion for martial arts and enthusiasm is known to be contagious in every class he teaches. Brian has spent the better part of the last two decades passing on his vast knowledge and skills as an Instructor at West Valley College and Saratoga Community Center.

Brian's versatile and comprehensive martial arts resume includes a Fourth Degree Black Belt in Shotokan Karate, Brown Belt in Judo, Blue Belt in Brazilian Jiu-jitsu, and competitive Kickboxing and San Shou experience. A veteran competitor of Karate, Judo, Jiu-jitsu and Kickboxing tournaments Brian showed composure, experience and technique on his way to winning a gold medal at the 2011 BJJ US Open for Smash Gyms.

Brian earned his Bachelor of Arts Degree majoring in Kinesiology at San Jose State and is also a Certified Strength and Conditioning Specialists. With his extensive experience, systematic training techniques and passion for teaching, Brian's goal is to develop each Smash Gyms kickboxing class into an exciting and dynamic learning experience.

Kickboxing classes are Monday-Friday at 6pm and Saturday at 12:00pm.

Smash Gyms also presented Jacob Palomino with an award for his contributions to our Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu and wrestling program. Jacob represented Smash Gyms while winning a Championship at the Brazilian Jiu-jitsu US Open in San Jose, California. He also tirelessly helps people in our grappling program learn his sophisticated and technical system of wrestling that he perfected on his way to becoming a Four-time California Wrestling High School State Championships Finalist.

Head Smash Gyms Krav Maga Instructor, Opher Har-El awarded Level 1 Certificates to members of the Krav Maga program. This realistic system of fighting with a focus on self-defense is taught by the 28-year practitioner . Opher teaches the true Krav Maga system he learned in the Israeli Military and his students feel privileged to be of such an authentic lineage.
