Success Story – Meet Troy Cole

Troy joined Smash Gyms in February 2014 to supplement his new rigorous fitness program.  Troy began his journey because he was fed up with having to consistently buy new clothes to accommodate his growing weight. That's when he decided that instead of making his next trip to the store for bigger pants, he made that trip to sign up at a gym.  Troy has been training and dieting for approximately 2 years and has lost an impressive 90lbs.

Troy is one of the most dedicated students a trainer could ask for.  He has become a leader in the Morning Bootcamp Classes by motivating his training partners. He has an unbelievably positive attitude with tremendous dedication and work ethic.  I had the pleasure to watch Troy run his last Spartan Race last weekend which inspired me to sign up for future Spartan races myself.  Troy is currently working on his Spartan Trifecta which he will complete with Team Smash in October at the Sacramento Super. I'm proud to be able to run with such an all-around awesome guy.

Mario Rios – BJJ Black Belt – Smash Gyms Instructor

People who know Mario Rios know two things about him. He is super nice and he knows A LOT about grappling! Mario is a very caring and passionate instructor. He has been involved in wrestling, judo and BJJ for almost 20 years.  This incredible experience in grappling provides a wealth of information anyone interested in advancing his or her grappling knowledge. If you take Mario’s classes you can look forward to highly detailed technical instruction explained in a way that you can easily understand and implement right away. He has helped many people advance in the grappling arts with his organized and systematic approach to grappling.

Mario started his training with grappling in 1995 while he was a student at Fresno State College.   In Fresno, there were no Jiu-Jitsu studios, so he started working out his house with Jason Hannen, now a black belt at Pacific Martial Arts.  Most of the techniques were drills based on Renzo and Craig Kukuk videos, since youtube was nonexistent, and information was hard to come by.

Mario Rios & Jason Hannen BJJ Black Belts

In those early days Mario sought out other Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu students who were commuting long distances to train at some of the Gracie Academies and began training regularly with them.  Some of these partners were wrestlers from Fresno Pacific and Fresno State.  During this time, Mario was also training at the Fresno Judo Club before moving from the area.

Mario Teaching Classes at Smash

After completing college, Mario was faced with the decision to relocate.  He had two requirements, finding a job, and finding his passion, Jiu Jitsu.  Mario found both and moved to the Bay Area in 1996.  In the beginning, he took classes with Claudio Franca. Although he enjoyed the classes because of such a long commute to Santa Cruz, he decided to train in Mountain View at Ralphs.  Training at Ralphs was a great experience.  Mario was able to train with some of the premier grapplers at the time and began to really understand the dedication necessary to excel at this art.

In 1999 began training with Michael Jen.  Michael’s unique approach and attention to detail was different from the Jiu-Jitsu he had experienced in his earlier training. Mario was impressed with Michael’s highly detailed instruction and his openness to share techniques.

BJJ Black Belts!

In 2010, when the first Smash Gyms opened Mario immediately became a leader in the gym and helped many people in different programs. The environment and resources that Smash provided motivated Mario to focus and push himself until he received his Black Belt in 2011 from Michael Jen. Mario believes Smash Gyms amazing instructors and members helped push him to reach his long-time goal of becoming a BJJ Black Belt. After seeing the incredible growth of Smash and the value that it has brought to our members, he decided he wanted to help open another Smash in San Jose. Mario is co-owner of San Jose Smash Gyms and will be working full-time and teaching BJJ classes along with fellow BJJ Black Belts Rudy Sanchez and Michael Jen. Mario’s goal is to bring as much value as possible to Smash members in Evergreen and East San Jose.

James Cebedo Earns a Silver Medal in Weightlifting Competition

Smash Strength & Conditioning Coach and personal trainer James Cebedo of Santa Clara earned a Silver Medal this weekend in an Olympic Weightlifting Competition in the 69kg weight class. He weighed in at 66.08kg, and was the lightest guy in the division. James plans on making 62kg in his next competition. It was a tough competition since the 1st place guy is a nationally ranked lifter. James lifted 91kg (200#) in snatch and 111kg (244#) in clean and jerk. He plans on cutting weight to the 62kg weight class to qualify for nationals! James is a certified personal trainer and crossfit instructor.

"I have come a long way in my 13-year fitness journey. When I started my fitness journey I had no athletic experience, I was overweight and I had average or below average genetics. I began to research everything about becoming fit and experimented with all aspects of fitness. I've made a lot of mistakes and learned from them. I have experimented and tested every theory of fitness from diet, to training methods, to mental preparation. You would not believe the crazy experiments I have tried. Now I know what works. With the knowledge and experience that I have gained through certifications, self-study and experimentation I pushed my body into what most would consider an elite athlete. I had no idea when I started this journey it would take me this far.

I am here to gladly pass all of that information, knowledge and experience on to you. I can just hand it to you. Trust the other coaches and myself with your fitness goals and I guarantee you that will reach them. Whether you want to lose fat, get stronger, add muscle, prepare for a competition, or just general overall fitness decide on your goal and let us know. We will give you the steps to reach your goal and help you along the way.

To improve yourself you should have a definitive plan. Share that plan with your coaches at Smash and we will help you get there. This is the best way to continue to improve. It becomes easy to stay motivated if you are specific with your goals and reach them. It is hard to reach your goals if you have none. We all needs that sense of accomplishment to stay happy as athletes and just as people. If you are unsure what you should be working on come see us and we will help you set your goals.

Name your goal and we will tell you all the steps to get there. I have 100% confidence in that statement. Every single person in class who have trusted the coaches in class were the ones who improved the most.  Ask any of the dedicated strength & conditioning members at Smash…this is not a matter of opinion, I have fitness data to back it up. Be coachable, have goals and we will change your life!"
