What do JiuJitsu, CrossFit & Yoga have in common?

Our innovative social fitness classes at Smash Gyms have taught us that the various arts and disciplines we teach are not so different. People may have a preference in form, but in substance, everyone enjoys these classes for the same reasons.

In each class, students learn skills from an expert instructor, while seeing measurable progress, creating relationships, and improving their health and mind.

When in any of these social fitness classes, you are totally present. This mindfulness is especially therapeutic and addictive.  When weightlifters are performing, their mental state is remarkably similar to the kickboxer, jiu-jitsu practitioner, or the parkour student. Being extremely focused in this messy and cluttered world of relentless input is an amazing feeling.

Progress is always incredible to see and experience. In every class, regular participants can been seen transforming from clumsy beginners to knowledgeable practitioners. Bodies and minds are improved through regular training as students learn, not only from the instructors, but from each other and themselves.  Members often comment how they are surprised by what they have been able to accomplish. They become fit and confident as a result of humbling themselves and entrusting the guidance of the instructors. These arts and disciplines easily turn into lifelong pursuits as the journey to improve is infinite. What one knows will always be less than what one doesn’t know.

Through this process of learning and personal development, incredible social bonds are made. Lifelong friendships, and even marriages, develop within the communities. Training partners and instructors become lifelong mentors, protégés, and family.

Jiu-jitsu, Crossfit, Yoga, Kickboxing, Parkour, Judo, MMA, etc...like it or not, we aren't so different.

MMA Instructor Beats Up Robber (VIDEO)

Smash Gyms MMA Instructor came home to find a burglar in his home. It did not end well for the bad guy!

If Brian Khun had not forgotten his martial arts uniform at home, his day would have been far different.

Thursday morning Khun was traveling between the two martial arts studios where he teaches kickboxing and MMA fighting when he decided to go home and pick up his uniform.

With his 5-year-old daughter right behind him, Brian entered his San Jose home to find a burglar in his dining room.

Brian says the man stood up and said, “Hey, this guy let me in.”

Worried for his daughter’s safety and seeing a pry bar in the man’s hand, Brian says he grabbed the burglar.

“I grabbed him to take him outside, he didn’t want to go, so then we started fighting.”

Brian says he delivered several punches, kneed him, put his head through a window, then dragged him outside in a headlock.

Neighbors, hearing a commotion, came outside and called 9-1-1.

“He was holding him down, waiting for police,” said neighbor Patricia McHarris, “it was pretty scary.”

McHarris has high praise for her neighbor calling his actions amazing.  San Jose Police arrested the man whose face was bloodied and swollen.

Khun says he wouldn’t recommend others try to confront a burglar if it can be avoided.

“Just sort of relieved that it ended the way that it did. That it didn’t end badly for me or my family,” said Khun.

Asher Falatic added to Smash Gyms Staff at Both Locations!

Asher is a certified athletic trainer and kettlebell instructor. He graduated with his Master’s Degree in Athletic Training from San Jose State University after moving from Ohio in 2009. While working as the assistant athletic trainer for the university’s football team he was exposed to kettlebells for the first time. Impressed by the challenging workouts kettlebells provided him, he quickly decided he wanted to be part of the cause. As a SFG I Kettlebell Instructor, Asher strives to work his clients hard and efficiently while implementing healthy lifestyle habits. Asher stays in shape by enjoying the outdoors through trail running and hiking. He continues to weight train and practice jujitsu.

A special congratulations to our awesome Kettlebell instructor Asher for getting his Masters thesis published in the Journal of Strength and Conditioning!

Titled "The Effects of Kettlebell Training on Aerobic Capacity", Asher used Division 1 soccer players to show that 20 minutes of kettlebell snatching with 15 seconds of rest significantly increases maximal oxygen consumption. New Fitness Classes at Smash San Jose!

Fitness Classes have started at the East San Jose Smash! Beginning Monday 2/24/14  we will have a full schedule of new fitness classes in our brand new Evergreen & East San Jose location! Strength & Conditioning classes will be at 5:30pm and 7:30pm throughout the week. We will also have our popular total body fitness bootcamps at 6:30pm Monday-Thursday. Both classes are very popular for all fitness levels and age groups!

Our fitness classes at Smash are like group personal training sessions! You don't need to wander around gym wondering what you should do. You will have instructors pushing your fitness to the next level. All of our instructors are certified professionals personal trainers!

Get Strong at Smash!

Our beginner friendly Strength & Conditioning Classes are taught by highly qualified certified trainers. Our trainers take a systematic and comprehensive approach to fitness. We understand that everyone has different goals and our trainers do everything we can to guarantee your success. In our program you will learn how to workout in way that gets results! In addition to getting in shape this program has a heavy focus on strength training and muscle gains. You will learn proper Olympic lifting technique with a very beginner friendly approach. Additionally participants will get an education on diet, fat loss and conditioning direction. You will get stronger and faster and gain lean muscle mass as you lose fat. The goal of this program is to help you reach your athletic potential. Instructors will closely monitor your progress and help you along your fitness journey. 

Functional Strength!

Our total body fitness Bootcamps are circuit training classes designed to burn calories and fat! Your cardiovascular endurance will see huge improvement in this class as you tone and sculpt your body into a functional fitness machine! There is no boredom here as with traditional exercise programs. The Smash Boot Camp staff ensures each participant does each exercise correctly each and every time. They know how to keep everyone moving with a smile on their face. Everyone is dedicated to getting you to your goal and will help make every aspect lead you there. Burn calories, build strength, and increase your coordination all in one class! The hour passes by quickly because of the timed stations, unique and fun exercises, awesome partners, and encouraging instructors! This class incorporates challenging workout stations designed to push anyone to the next level! You get an intense overall workout while allowing you to progress at your own pace. A winning and fun combination of aerobic, weight training, and body weight exercises like you've never seen!

Smash Gyms San Jose is Now OPEN!!!!

Smash Gyms San Jose Evergreen & East San Jose will begin classes tomorrow February 4th! After dealing with the permitting process since July we were finally cleared to open. Thanks so much for all the help and support from the local community!

Try our first Jiu-Jitsu class Free on Tuesday evening at 7:30pm! We will add programs and classes in the days and weeks after. Please see the link to the schedule below for updates.
