Scott Clymer – Smash Gyms Wrestling Coach

A NCAA East Regional Champion Scott Clymer had been ranked as high as 19th in the nation and was on track to become a D1 All-American his senior year. Unfortunately Liberty University, where Scott was attending lost it's Division 1 status due to Title IX when he was going into his senior year. Like many wrestling teams that lost their status, Liberty's wrestlers were forced to wrestle in NCWA.

Scott made a statement his senior year. He was a MAC Conference Champion and NCWA National Champion. Amazing achievement! He also made a statement in the final, beating his opponent by technical fall! For those of you not familiar with wrestling a technical fall means you're winning by so many points (15) they just stop the match as a mercy rule for your opponent. To do that in the final of a national college tournament is extremely impressive.

Scott is also an exceptional coach and is putting a ton of thought and effort into the wrestling program at Smash. His passion for wrestling led him to become an assistant coach at Liberty University. This is when he discovered his talent for coaching. Under the guidance of world class wrestling coaches Jesse Castro and Joe Pantaleo he began refining his coaching abilities until he knew it was his calling.

Scott moved all the way from his home State of Pennsylvania to help start the Smash Gyms Wrestling Program and train martial arts at the new Smash in San Jose. Scott,  Filip Novachkov, Eli Sanchez, Jacob Palomino and other local coaches make an incredible wrestling staff. They regularly meet and are developing a complete curriculum in which they have picked apart each others game. The coaches are analyzing every position imaginable to borrow from each other's specialities to come up with a comprehensive wrestling curriculum that quickly progress anyone to a high level. Scott truly wants to help make an improvement in the local wrestling community and has already began to make a huge impact.

Scott teaches a full schedule of classes. Smash has wrestling classes for kids, teens and adults. Try a free week!

Judo Throw Instructional by Patrick Kong

Filmed & Edited by Easten Tanimoto.

Patrick is a Judo Black Belt, BJJ Purple Belt and Smash Gyms Ultra Heavy Weight! He has made big noise with his judo for the last couple years in the local BJJ competition scene. As an Ultra heavyweight there is no weight limit and although he is small for an ultra heavyweight he's sent some unsuspecting big boys (some over 300lbs!) for ride with this throw. Patrick's throws have even convinced some ultra heavyweights to pull guard! This is rarely seen with guys that big.

Long before training Jiu-Jitsu at Smash Patrick was on the Judo Team at San Jose State University. SJSU has one of the toughest Judo teams in the nation and Patrick was beat on mercilessly by the competition team in the practice room. Thanks to his humble attitude, mental toughness and the guidance of Coach Dave Williams he became a force his senior year. As a judo team walk on, Patrick impressively won 3rd place in the 2002 Collegiate Nationals!

Over time Patrick's judo has evolved and has become more effective. What most people don't know is that some of Patrick biggest throws have happened behind closed doors during practices with Smash teammates of high level wrestling and judo backgrounds. He has refined his system of judo and is now ready to share what he has learned with his teammates at Smash.

Due to popular demand Patrick is now teach 8:00am Judo Classes at Smash Sunnyvale on Tuesdays and Thursdays. People LOVE this class! Patrick has always been a great partner and student so it's great to see him sharing his knowledge at Smash!

Mario Rios – BJJ Black Belt – Smash Gyms Instructor

People who know Mario Rios know two things about him. He is super nice and he knows A LOT about grappling! Mario is a very caring and passionate instructor. He has been involved in wrestling, judo and BJJ for almost 20 years.  This incredible experience in grappling provides a wealth of information anyone interested in advancing his or her grappling knowledge. If you take Mario’s classes you can look forward to highly detailed technical instruction explained in a way that you can easily understand and implement right away. He has helped many people advance in the grappling arts with his organized and systematic approach to grappling.

Mario started his training with grappling in 1995 while he was a student at Fresno State College.   In Fresno, there were no Jiu-Jitsu studios, so he started working out his house with Jason Hannen, now a black belt at Pacific Martial Arts.  Most of the techniques were drills based on Renzo and Craig Kukuk videos, since youtube was nonexistent, and information was hard to come by.

In those early days Mario sought out other Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu students who were commuting long distances to train at some of the Gracie Academies and began training regularly with them.  Some of these partners were wrestlers from Fresno Pacific and Fresno State.  During this time, Mario was also training at the Fresno Judo Club before moving from the area.

Mario Teaching Classes at Smash

After completing college, Mario was faced with the decision to relocate.  He had two requirements, finding a job, and finding his passion, Jiu Jitsu.  Mario found both and moved to the Bay Area in 1996.  In the beginning, he took classes with Claudio Franca. Although he enjoyed the classes because of such a long commute to Santa Cruz, he decided to train in Mountain View at Ralphs.  Training at Ralphs was a great experience.  Mario was able to train with some of the premier grapplers at the time and began to really understand the dedication necessary to excel at this art.

In 1999 began training with Michael Jen.  Michael’s unique approach and attention to detail was different from the Jiu-Jitsu he had experienced in his earlier training. Mario was impressed with Michael’s highly detailed instruction and his openness to share techniques.

BJJ Black Belts!

In 2010, when the first Smash Gyms opened Mario immediately became a leader in the gym and helped many people in different programs. The environment and resources that Smash provided motivated Mario to focus and push himself until he received his Black Belt in 2011 from Michael Jen. Mario believes Smash Gyms amazing instructors and members helped push him to reach his long-time goal of becoming a BJJ Black Belt. After seeing the incredible growth of Smash and the value that it has brought to our members, he decided he wanted to help open another Smash in San Jose. Mario is co-owner of San Jose Smash Gyms and will be working full-time and teaching BJJ classes along with fellow BJJ Black Belts Rudy Sanchez and Michael Jen. Mario’s goal is to bring as much value as possible to Smash members in Evergreen and East San Jose.
