Smash Gyms presents - Women's Self-Defense Seminar!
One of the only self-defense seminars in California that uses fully padded mock assailant instructors. This equipment allows the instructors to teach self-defense to students in an safe but realistic adrenalized state which helps them learn how to fight through the "freeze response" that naturally happens when attacked. This also allows the participants to practice real life application of the techniques with 100% full force for a fun, unique and possibly life-saving experience!

If you want to truly learn a subject you need to see an authority on the matter. If you want to learn how to throw kicks and punches at the highest level you need to find a kickboxing coach. Nothing makes a person ready, aware, ferocious, in shape like taking our self-defense classes. If you want to protect yourself, control and then submit an attacker in a one on one fight you should take BJJ classes. If you want to learn to knife fight then come to one of our weapons classes! None of these fighting styles is an expert in every situation. Every one of them is an expert in many situations though.

Meet friends and learn the best self-defense for women!
Smash Gyms Women's Only Brazilian Jiu-jitsu Class on Sundays from 10am-12pm. The class is currently FREE to all women who are currently members of any Smash Gyms program! Drop-ins for non-members is $5.
All Women are welcomed! This beginner friendly class and is a introduction to the Smash Gyms Jiu-jitsu program in a non-threatening and friendly environment. It is also a great way for the Women's BJJ Community in the Bay Area to meet and train together! Women from San Jose, Santa Clara, Sunnyvale and Mountain View feel free to join and have a great time.
Smash Gyms Jiu-jitsu student Crystina Coats is leading the class. Crystina is a BJJ purple belt training at Smash Gyms under Michael Jen.
Crystina first began training jiu-jitsu under Carlson Gracie in 2003. Since then, she has competed and medaled in many women's grappling and BJJ competitions including major tournaments such as Grapplers Quest West, Pan Ams of Submission Grappling, Best of the West, and On The Mat American International Championships. Crystina qualified and competed in the prestigious 2006 North American ADCC trials in New Jersey. Crystina earned a spot on the USA Team as an alternate and competitor at the Fila World Grappling Games 2007 in Antalya, Turkey.
During her BJJ career Crystina has not only earned over 30 medals in BJJ competitions but has also trained under some of the best instructors in the Jiu-jitsu world. Before training at Smash Gyms Crystina was a student under Carlson Gracie, Rodrigo Medeiros, Dean Lister, Elias Gallegos and others. Crystina helped start a successful Women Only BJJ program at her past school and is eager to pass along her grappling knowledge to women in this new beginner friendly class at Smash Gyms!
A quick update on all these awesome new kickboxing classes. Before the New Year, Smash only had two kickboxing classes throughout the week. In 2012 every kickboxing student will have access to at least 4 classes throughout the week. We now have kickboxing classes Monday through Saturday! To accommodate everyone's goals and all fitness and skill levels there are now 3 different kickboxing Levels at Smash. All three levels may not be for everyone but all three are for someone.
Smashfit Level 1 - This is what we've always had and there are no real changes to these classes. You will continue to learn and progress in technique and get a great workout without ever getting punched. The focus will be on getting a great workout and refining offensive technique as you develop.
Level 2 Kickboxing - This will be an advanced kickboxing class. There will be a test in February for students that are interested in the Level 2 classes. If you choose to test for Level 2 you must get headgear, shinguards, your own gloves and a mouth piece. Get these asap! The test will consist of the combinations, technique, and timed body weight exercises to ensure those students are at a minimum required fitness level. We will announce the test dates soon!
All Levels Classes - These will continue to be on Friday and Saturday will focus on both conditioning and technique (without sparring) and be similar to the classes Brian is currently instructing.
If you enrolled in the kickboxing program you are welcomed to attend the Level 1 and All Level Classes with no testing. To prepare for the Level 2 Testing in February all kickboxing students may attend all the classes until the first test. Once testing is done only those advanced students will have access to the Monday and Wednesday classes.
Tuesdays and Thursdays is SmashFit Level 1 Kickboxing (pads and mitts; no contact); Level 2 (advanced) is on Monday and Wednesday (pads and mitts; light sparring); All Levels is on Friday and Saturday.
SmashFit Level 1- Tuesday and Thursday at 6pm
Level 2 - Monday and Wednesday- 6pm
All Levels- Friday at 6:00pm (changing to 6:30pm on February 3rd) and Saturday at 12:00pm
Open Sparring- Saturday at 1:00pm and Friday at 7:30pm

The Smash Gyms Jiu-jitsu program includes a systematic blend of Brazilian Jiu-jitsu, Wrestling, and Judo into a complete grappling system that will safely progress beginners at an accelerated pace. Our system is designed as a path for the average person to progress safely and quickly into an expert grappler. The system has proven to be highly effective in both self-defense and Brazilian Jiu-jitsu sport competition. You will find our unique Jiu-jitsu classes are presented in a format highly conducive to learning while maintaining a strong focus on safety. All the evening classes are taught by Michael Jen who is 3rd degree BJJ Blackbelt and widely recognized as one of the most technical and most experienced BJJ instructors in the U.S.
Classes typically include a full hour of technique, drilling and instruction followed by a half hour of structured sparring under the supervision of the instructors. Open mat follows nightly.

The Smash Gyms Self-Defense System is a unique program designed to quickly teach every student the skills and knowledge to effectively protect oneself. Krav Maga is the official self-defense system of the Israeli Defense Forces (IDF), Israeli Anti-terrorist Units, and various branches of the Israeli Security Forces. Krav Maga was developed in Israel, under realistic battlefield and street conditions. This comprehensive system of martial arts has recently been adopted by and taught to many law enforcement and military organizations, including the US Air Marshals, F.B.I., C.I.A, D.E.A., U.S. Secret Service, and numerous Police Departments.

Kettlebells have been popular in Russia for a long time, but have become very popular in the U.S. recently due to the intense and productive workouts you can get while using kettlebells.
One of the unique benefits of kettlebells is the improvements to both cardiovascular and anabolic systems. Kettlebell users also have tremendous gains in overall functional strength. Simply put you can increase your overall fitness and tone up your muscles with kettlebells if used correctly.
Our program will teach you all the details on advanced and basic lifts and techniques. Our kettlebell classes have a strong focus on proper body mechanics and real Russian kettlebell techniques.
SMASH STRENGTH AND CONDITIONING:
Anyone can join this beginner friendly class! All classes are taught by by CrossFit certified instructors and personal training veterans. Every class is like a personal training session. The Smash Gyms Strength and Conditioning Program is for those individuals with goals to reach their personal maximum fitness potential. While maintaining a strong focus on safety, this beginner friendly program will teach you how to train like a professional athlete in a fun and supportive environment. Starting in January we have a new addition to the talented staff of instructors at Smash Gyms. Brian Kuhn joins the kickboxing program as a Level 2 Kickboxing Instructor and will be teaching 4 days a week. He will be working with Sam Spengler, Rose Jen, Michael Jen and Naomi Harel to take our kickboxing program to the next level. We're very excited to have another experienced and dedicated instructor help lead this new program!
Brian Kuhn has been a life-long student, competitor and instructor in the Bay Area martial arts community. He has close to 20 years of teaching experience in a variety of different disciplines including karate, kickboxing, MMA and self-defense. His passion for martial arts and enthusiasm is known to be contagious in every class he teaches. Brian has spent the better part of the last two decades passing on his vast knowledge and skills as an Instructor at West Valley College and Saratoga Community Center.
Brian's versatile and comprehensive martial arts resume includes a Fourth Degree Black Belt in Shotokan Karate, Brown Belt in Judo, Blue Belt in Brazilian Jiu-jitsu, and competitive Kickboxing and San Shou experience. A veteran competitor of Karate, Judo, Jiu-jitsu and Kickboxing tournaments Brian showed composure, experience and technique on his way to winning a gold medal at the 2011 BJJ US Open for Smash Gyms.
Brian earned his Bachelor of Arts Degree majoring in Kinesiology at San Jose State and is also a Certified Strength and Conditioning Specialists. With his extensive experience, systematic training techniques and passion for teaching, Brian's goal is to develop each Smash Gyms kickboxing class into an exciting and dynamic learning experience.
Kickboxing classes are Monday-Friday at 6pm and Saturday at 12:00pm.
